Get a 12-gauge cord for outdoor power tools.
At least 12-gauge, and as short as you can get away with.
Thin extension cords (14-gauge or 16-gauge) drop voltage over distance. Your leaf blower or trimmer compensates by pulling more current, which heats up the cord and weakens the motor. A 12-gauge cord handles the load without drama.
Length matters too. A 100-foot cord, even 12-gauge, will still drop some voltage. If you only need 50 feet, buy 50 feet. Don’t coil excess — that creates a choke point and heat.
Also make sure it’s rated for outdoor use (look for “SJTW” or “STW” on the jacket). Indoor cords don’t like moisture, cold, or being dragged across concrete.
If you’re on the fence between two gauges, go thicker. The extra few bucks saves you a tool replacement down the road.
