Get a 12V cooler, not a lunch box

If you spend your whole shift in a truck or van, the answer is a 12V cooler that plugs into the power outlet — not a lunch box.

Passive lunch bags depend on ice packs, and those are done by hour four or five in a hot cab. A basic 12V thermoelectric cooler keeps food and drinks properly cold all shift. They run about $60–$100, plug straight into the cigarette lighter, and some models switch to warming mode if you want a hot meal.

If you’re on the road overnight or do multi-day hauls, spend real money on a compressor cooler (Dometic or Alpicool). It actually refrigerates. Thermoelectric units only cool about 40°F below the surrounding air, and in a summer cab that’s barely fridge-cold. Compressor units are $300+, but they’ll hold freezing temps no matter what it’s like outside.

If your route is short hops and you’re home by lunch, skip both and get a decent soft-sided bag with a good ice pack. Less space, no cables, and for four to six hours it’s honestly fine.

Just check that whatever you pick fits behind the seat or on the floor, and that the cord reaches. Future You deserves a cold sandwich.
