Get a big glass container with a snap-lock lid

A large glass container with a snap-lock lid is the best lunch box for big portions of leftovers.

Glass won’t stain from tomato sauce. It won’t absorb last night’s curry smell. And you can microwave it straight from the fridge without worrying about weird plastic leaching into your food. The snap-lock lids are what make it actually portable — they seal tightly enough that you don’t get soup drips in your work bag.

Look for something around 4-6 cups. A 4-cup glass container comfortably holds a big plate-sized portion of dinner with room for a side. If you tend to eat a lot, the 6-cup size from Glasslock or Pyrex is great. The lid should have those latch clips, not just a press-on top. Trust me, the clip feels cheap at first but it’s the only thing that keeps a full container from popping open when you throw your bag over your shoulder.

If you specifically want hot food, a wide-mouth insulated Thermos or Stanley keeps things steam-in at lunchtime. But for most people packing dinners from the fridge, a big glass snap-lock container is the simplest, most versatile choice.

Future you gets a proper lunch instead of something sad from a sad little plastic tub.
