Get a food jar, not a lunch box, for eating in the car.

A wide-mouth insulated food jar with a rubberized base is the best lunch box for car commuters.

You don’t need compartments. You need something that won’t slide off your passenger seat while you’re stopped at a light. A regular lunch box is a disaster in a car — the base is flat and slick, the lid opens awkwardly, and you’re juggling containers. A food jar solves all of that.

Look for something like the Thermos Stainless King, Hydro Flask Food Jar, or a Zojirushi jar. The key is the non-slip bottom — most of them have a silicone or rubberized ring that grips the seat or console. They’re also wide enough to eat out of with a spoon in one hand, and the insulation keeps hot food hot until you’re actually parked and ready to eat.

If you absolutely need multiple foods separated, get a bento-style box with a silicone outer sleeve (Monbento makes good ones). But know that you’re trading stability for compartments. For pure one-handed, non-slip, eat-while-parked simplicity, a food jar wins.
