Get a lunch box with a lift-off lid, not a zipper

The easiest lunch box for a preschooler is one with a lid that lifts straight off and a bag with a magnetic flap — not a zipper or a tight latch.

Zippers are the enemy. Kids under five don’t have the finger strength or dexterity to line up a zipper pull and glide it around a curve. So if you buy a cute lunch bag with a zipper, you’re going to be opening it for them every single day. Same story with bento boxes that have stiff snap latches. They look good, but they defeat the whole “do it myself” thing.

Look for two things. For the container itself, something like the Easy Lunchboxes (the plain four-compartment one) works great because the lid just pops off and snaps back on — no tricky alignment. For the outer bag, skip zippers altogether and get one with a magnetic or hook-and-loop flap closure. The kids can just pull it open and slap it shut.

One check: try opening and closing it yourself with one hand. If you have to fight it, a three-year-old won’t be able to handle it either.
