Get a Pelican, not a lunch box

The most durable lunch box for a construction worker is a rotomolded cooler like the Pelican 20QT — not anything that’s actually sold as a “lunch box.”

Pelican makes hard cases for military gear, and their coolers use the same trick: one-piece rotomolded plastic, thick walls, and latches that survive real drops. It’s waterproof, crushproof, and you can stand on it. It’ll take being tossed in a truck bed, rained on, or knocked off a ladder without a scratch.

The trade-offs are weight and price. The 20QT runs around $60–100 and weighs about six pounds empty. That’s real weight to carry daily, but it’s the “buy once, cry once” answer. A Yeti Roadie is similar but costs more for the name. A classic metal lunch box dents, and the clasp breaks within a year. Soft-sided coolers tear, no matter the brand.

If you absolutely can’t deal with the weight, get a decent soft cooler and accept that you’ll replace it in 18 months. But if you want the last lunch box you’ll ever buy, get the Pelican. It’ll outlast the job site.
