Get a robotic pool cleaner.

Yes, robotic pool cleaners are better than suction-side models in almost every way that matters.

A robotic cleaner is basically a self-contained robot with its own motor, pump, and filter bag. It doesn’t rely on your pool’s main circulation system. That means it can scrub walls, climb steps, and even scrub waterline tile without stealing suction from your skimmer. The filter bag catches finer debris than your main filter typically does. And they usually have better navigation—they map your pool and actually cover the whole floor instead of bouncing around randomly.

Suction-side cleaners are cheap, I’ll give them that. You can get one for under $200. But they plug into your skimmer or dedicated suction line, which means they put extra strain on your pump and can reduce your main filtration flow. They also don’t climb walls well, get stuck on drains, and the cheap diaphragm ones break every season. You get what you pay for.

If you have the budget—say $700 to $1,500 for a good robotic—it’s worth it. You’ll clean less, fix less, and your pool will actually be clean. If you’re really pinching pennies, get a used robotic off Facebook Marketplace before buying a new suction-side.

Your pool chemistry and filter will thank you.
