Get a rolling kitchen cart that fits in a gap

The most space-efficient way to store rare-use appliances in a studio is a narrow rolling cart that slides into a gap next to the fridge or between counters.

You don’t need a bulky island or a giant baker’s rack. What you need is one of those slim (12-18 inch wide) metal or wood utility carts on wheels. They’re like filing cabinets for kitchen gadgets. Stack your stand mixer on the bottom shelf, the blender in the middle, maybe a slow cooker on top. Wheel it out when you need something, wheel it back when you’re done.

The key is “rare-use.” Those appliances you break out three times a year don’t need prime real estate in cabinets or on the counter. A cart tucks into otherwise wasted space—next to the fridge, beside a doorway, even in a closet if you’re desperate. And because it’s on wheels, you’re not reaching into some dark corner cabinet every time.

If you don’t have a gap wide enough, look into hanging wall cabinets that mount above the counter but aren’t too deep (like 12 inches). Or a magnetic knife bar for your blender blade attachments. But the cart is the simplest fix.

Don’t underestimate what a 12-inch gap can store.
