Get a rotomolded cooler for direct sun.

Yes, that means spending more. But if you want ice to last more than a few hours on a blazing beach, rotomolded is the answer.

Standard roto-molded coolers (Yeti, Pelican, RTIC, etc.) have thick polyurethane foam insulation and airtight gaskets. That combination blocks heat transfer way better than cheaper injection-molded coolers with hollow walls. The thicker the walls, the longer ice stays frozen—period.

Color matters too. White or light colors reflect sunlight. Dark colors absorb it. If you’re in direct sun, go white or tan. A black rotomolded cooler still outperforms a cheap blue one, but don’t make things harder than they need to be.

One more thing: pre-chill the cooler the night before. Throw in a bag of ice or frozen bottles, close it up, then empty it right before you pack. That cold mass buys you extra hours.

A good rotomolded cooler is heavy and expensive. It’s also the only one I’d trust for a full day in the sun.
