Get a rotomolded cooler, not a lunch box

The best lunch box for a construction worker is a small rotomolded cooler like the Pelican 14QT or Yeti Roadie 24.

You don’t want a lunch box. You want a hard cooler that happens to be the right size for food. Rotomolded plastic takes a drop, gets kicked, gets covered in dirt, and you just hose it off. No zippers to jam, no fabric to tear, no thin walls to crack.

Sealing matters too. The gasket on these keeps dust and grime from getting to your food, and it keeps smells from leaking into your truck. A soft-sided bag might be easier to carry, but on a construction site it’ll be stained and ripped within a month.

You also don’t need a big one. A 14 to 20 quart size fits a lunch, a water bottle, and an ice pack. If you’re on a budget, a cheaper rotomolded brand like Lifetime or Coleman works fine — I’d still take a $40 Lifetime over a $100 soft cooler.

Your lunch isn’t the place to save a few bucks. Especially not when the alternative is eating a warm sandwich out of a crushed plastic bag.
