Get a rotomolded cooler with stainless steel hardware.
Yes, that’s it. For saltwater, you want a cooler built to handle the abuse — UV, salt spray, wet sand, and being bounced around in a boat. Rotomolded construction (one-piece plastic, no seams) is tough and won’t corrode. But the hardware is the real weak point. Stainless steel latches, hinges, and drain plugs are non-negotiable. Zinc or plated steel will rust within a season.
The usual suspects — Yeti, Pelican, Engel, RTIC — all make models with stainless hardware. Yeti is the most expensive and the most overhyped. I’d skip it. Engel and RTIC give you the same durability for less. Pelican is also solid if you find a deal. Just check the specs: “stainless steel” should be listed. If it says “corrosion-resistant” without specifying, it’s probably not stainless.
One more thing: avoid coolers with integrated cup holders or extra plastic bits that saltwater can get into. Keep it simple. A rotomolded box with good latches and a gasket that seals tight.
Your fish deserves better than a rusty latch.
