Get a sand spike with a wide base and thick walls.

Yes, that’s what you need. Thin, narrow rod holders will sink or bend in soft sand. Look for a “sand spike” design with a large flat flange at the bottom or a screw-in auger style. PVC pipe works in a pinch but will eventually bend under heavy rod pressure.

The flange distributes your rod’s weight so it doesn’t punch through. Aluminum or stainless steel is fine—just make sure the tube walls are at least 1/16" thick. Cheap stamped steel holders will buckle in soft sand after one good tug.

Most decent sand spikes cost $15–$30. Don’t buy the $8 ones from the gas station. That’s where the bending comes from.

If you fish from the beach regularly, get a screw-in style. They hold like an anchor. Flange-style is fine for lighter rods. Both beat fixing a bent holder mid-fight.
