Get a screw-top food jar with a silicone seal

A screw-top food jar with a silicone gasket is the only real answer. Anything with a click-down latch is lying to you.

I’ve tested the obvious suspects. Bentgo compartments and those cute clip-lid boxes are fine for sandwiches and apple slices, but they’ll weep in your bag if you try to carry soup or thinned yogurt. The physics just doesn’t work: plastic hinges get weak, and the latch doesn’t press evenly.

The stuff that actually works is the insulated “food jar” category — Thermos, Hydro Flask, Zojirushi. They’re basically a wide-mouth thermos with a thread-on lid and a rubber ring. Screw it down tight and you can throw it sideways in a backpack without a leak. For yogurt, same thing, just get the smaller size.

Only real downside: you eat straight out of the jar, so keep a spoon in your bag. That’s fine. Nobody needs a leakproof soup container that’s also ergonomic. That doesn’t exist.

The lid threads are doing the work, not some goddamn latch.
