Get a small hard cooler, not a lunch bag

Get a small hard cooler, not a lunch bag.

The best lunch box for shift workers is a small hard cooler in the 8–15 liter range. Soft insulated bags just don’t cut it when your food sits in a truck, break room, or hospital locker for 10–14 hours.

The physics is simple: soft bags have thin insulation and equalize with the surrounding air in a few hours. A decent hard cooler like an RTIC, Pelican, or even the cheap Ozark Trail from Walmart holds ice for 24+ hours. That’s the difference between a cold lunch at hour 9 and a lukewarm bacteria farm.

Skip the bento boxes and fancy compartment systems. You want a big open space, two good ice packs (or frozen water bottles — they pull double duty), and a lid that seals tight. The Ozark Trail 8-can or RTIC 12-can is the right size. If you want to spend more, Yeti is great, but it’s not twice the cooler.

Your food sitting in a lukewarm bag for 10 hours is how you get food poisoning at 3am. Don’t learn that lesson the hard way.
