Get a soft cooler, not a lunchbox

For a motorcycle or a bike messenger bag, a soft-sided insulated cooler is the right answer, not a hard lunchbox. Hard cases take up too much space, don’t fit in panniers, and turn into projectiles if you have to stop fast.

Soft coolers flex into whatever space you have — a messenger bag, a top case, or a roll bag strapped to the seat. They’re lighter, easier to grab, and most are reasonably waterproof or at least water-resistant. That matters when you get caught in rain or your bag hits the ground.

Look for a few things: a roll-top or sealed zipper if you’re serious about weather, a wide mouth so you can get a Tupperware box in and out, and an external pocket for snacks or utensils. You don’t need a fancy brand. Chrome Industries makes durable urban bags that double as lunch carriers, and Ortlieb is great if you want fully waterproof gear, but any decent insulated cooler with a strap will do the job.

Your food stays put and stays fresh, and that’s all you really need.
