Get a Soft Zippered Lunch Bag, Not a Hard Case
For arthritic hands, the best lunch box is a soft-sided insulated bag with a big zipper pull and a long shoulder strap.
Hard lunch boxes with buckles and latches are the worst. They force you to pinch tiny clips, twist stiff hinges, and grip metal edges — all the motions that hurt.
Soft bags are better because they don’t need a strong grip. The main thing to check is the zipper. If the pull is small and flat, you’ll struggle. Look for a pull big enough to hook a finger through, or just attach a keyring or a large binder ring to the existing zip. That one trick fixes almost any bag.
Also skip short little handles. A long strap you can sling over your shoulder or lower arm is easier than a handle you have to grip. Weight is rarely an issue — most insulated totes are light even with food inside. A wide opening helps too, so you don’t have to dig around.
Any basic insulated zipper tote works, even a cheap one from the grocery store.
