Get a system with metal uprights and brackets, not plastic clips

The best modular shelving for small spaces uses metal uprights and brackets—avoid anything with plastic clips or fixed holes.

Plastic-based systems (like IKEA’s EKET or cube shelves) are fine for one configuration, but they don’t survive reconfiguration well. The clips break, the holes strip, and you end up buying new parts. Metal uprights and brackets—think Elfa, Vitsoe, or even IKEA’s ALGOT system—let you move shelves up and down infinitely without wearing out.

The real win for small spaces is that you can start with a single tall column, then add a desk surface, a hanging rail, or a side extension later. You’re not locked into a layout. And when you move to a different apartment, you just pull the brackets out and reassemble.

Don’t cheap out on the connector hardware. It’s what makes the system actually reconfigurable versus “I guess I’ll just buy a new shelf.”

Future you will thank you when you can change the layout in ten minutes instead of ten hours.
