Get a vacuum-insulated food jar, not a lunch box

A vacuum-insulated food jar is what you want for keeping a meal hot until a late lunch — not a regular lunch box.

I’m talking about the Thermos-style stainless steel jars, the ones that are tall and look like a big thermos with a wider mouth. They’re made for exactly this. You fill them with piping hot food in the morning, and it’s still hot at 1 PM. Even solid stuff like rice and curry works, not just soup.

There are two that I trust: the Thermos Stainless King 24 oz and the Zojirushi all-metal vacuum lunch jar. The Zojirushi is pricier but keeps food hotter longer. Both have a good track record.

One trick that makes a bigger difference than the brand: pre-heat the jar. Fill it with boiling water, screw the lid on, let it sit for 5 minutes, dump the water, then pack your hot food. That staging step buys you an extra hour or two of heat. Do it every time.

The electric lunch boxes that plug in at work are fine if you have a desk and a wall outlet. But they don’t “keep” anything warm unless you’re near electricity. The insulated bag with gel packs is weak. The vacuum jar is the one that actually works on a commute.

Just don’t call it a lunch box. It’s a food jar, it becomes your whole lunch routine, and it’s the best tool for the job.

Future you gets a hot lunch, and that’s worth the $30.
