Get a wall-plug lunch box, not a USB one

You want the kind that plugs into a wall outlet, not the USB kind—USB barely warms, and it won’t heat a cold meal properly.

The math is simple: USB ports push about 5 to 10 watts, which is fine for charging a phone, useless for food. A proper electric lunch box pulls 50 watts or more from an outlet (many also work in a car with a 12V adapter). That extra wattage is what actually takes your leftover pasta from room temperature to “careful, that’s hot” in 30 to 45 minutes.

Look for one with a built-in heating plate or a heated inner container—not just a heating pouch around the outside. The plate gives you even, direct heat. Brands like Hotlogic and a bunch of generic ones are all fine as long as the wattage is there. If you’re shopping, check that it plugs into the wall and skip anything that only takes USB-C. Even if the spec says “quick charge,” it’s still underpowered for food.

One practical tip: turn it on when you sit down, not when you’re hungry. They’re not microwave fast. But they’re quiet, don’t smell up the office, and keep your meal from drying out like the microwave does. Get a decent one and your desk lunch is sorted.

Future You will be eating a hot meal instead of a sad cold salad.
