Get a wide-mouth thermos for soup

The best lunch box for hot soup is a wide-mouth insulated thermos, and the Thermos Stainless King is the one to beat. It keeps soup hot for a half day, doesn’t leak, and won’t make your lunch bag smell like last week’s chicken noodle.

Regular plastic containers are fine for salads, but they’re the wrong tool for soup. The lids seal well enough in theory, but hot liquid pressurizes the container, and those little rubber gaskets aren’t made for that. One bump in your backpack and you’re dealing with a warm, oily mess. Also, plastic absorbs smell and stains after one tomato soup.

Thermos-type containers work because they have a vacuum-insulated steel body and a threaded lid with a solid silicone seal. There’s no snap hinge to pop open. You fill it, screw it tight, and it stays shut. If you want it to still be steaming at noon, fill the thermos with boiling water while you heat your soup, dump the water, then pour the soup in. Either one is a solid choice. Just get stainless steel interior — cheap models with plastic liners are harder to clean, and you’ll regret it.
