Get a zippered soft lunch pouch, not a hard bento box

The best lunch box for a desk-drawer teacher is a small zippered insulated soft pouch with a wipe-clean interior, and the real leak protection comes from the container you put inside.

Hard boxes and bento lids are loud. Velcro is loud. A smooth zipper on a soft bag is the quietest thing you can open in a quiet classroom. You want the bag small enough to squeeze into a drawer, but not so cramped that you have to smash your food every morning.

Leakproof is the tricky part. Most soft lunch bags are splash-proof at best, not submarine-proof. So buy a leakproof container — LocknLock, a glass container with locking tabs, or a stainless food jar — and put that inside. The bag just needs to catch drips, not survive a flipped soup.
