Get an insulated food jar, not a soup Thermos with a flimsy lid
Yes, they exist: wide-mouth insulated food jars with twist-on lids and thick rubber gaskets are genuinely leakproof. The key is buying one designed for food, not a traditional beverage Thermos, and sealing it properly.
Go with something like the Thermos Stainless King Food Jar or Zojirushi’s food jar. These have wide mouths, so you can actually get stew out, and the twist-down lids press a gasket into the rim hard enough that nothing escapes. I’ve thrown one in a backpack sideways — no drama.
Two tricks matter more than the lid:
- Preheat the jar. Fill it with boiling water, close it, let it sit for 5 minutes, then dump it out and fill with piping hot soup or stew. This keeps things hot enough that you won’t be tempted to microwave plastic later.
- Leave an inch of headspace. Most “leakproof” failures happen because people overfill. Steam builds up, pressure forces past the gasket. Don’t fill it to the brim.
Also check the gasket now and then — if it’s misaligned or worn, no twist-lock lid will save you. And if you get one with a flip-up drink spout instead of a twist lid, that’s not what you want. Twist-lock or nothing.
