Get hybrid swim trunks.

Yes, hybrids are the best all-around choice for most guys.

Board shorts look great on the beach but turn into a soggy, heavy mess the second you actually swim. They take forever to dry, and the long inseam can feel restrictive when you’re trying to kick your legs. Great for lounging, terrible for lap swimming or snorkeling.

Briefs (aka speedos) are for one thing: swimming seriously. They’re efficient, dry fast, and won’t weigh you down. But unless you’re training or at a European pool, you’ll look like you’re trying too hard. Not great for a casual day at the lake.

Hybrids split the difference. Shorter inseam (5-7 inches), stretch fabric, usually a zip pocket, and they dry quickly. You can swim laps, play volleyball, grab lunch, and still look like a normal person. Many double as casual shorts if you have a belt loop. Worth the extra ten bucks.

Unless you’re competing or lounging exclusively, hybrids cover all bases.
