Get Keen Newport H2s for protection, Xero Z-Trails for feel.

Both are waterproof, grippy, and handle hot sand and rocks better than anything else I’ve tried. The real question is how much foot you want to feel.

Keen Newport H2s have a closed toe and a thick sole. They’ll block sharp rocks and insulate you from sand that’s hot enough to fry an egg. Downside: they’re a little clunky, take forever to dry, and sand gets trapped inside. But if you’ve ever stepped on a barnacle barefoot, you’ll trade clunk for protection.

Xero Z-Trails are the opposite. They drain fast, dry in minutes, and let you feel the ground. They’re basically 2010s-era Vibram FiveFingers but wearing normal-looking sandals. Great for rocky shores where you want to know where your foot is. Bad for sand hot enough to burn – that thin sole doesn’t insulate. You’ll be hopping.

If you only want one pair, get the Keens. They work everywhere. If you’re a minimalist who hates shoes, get the Xeros. Either way, skip the $15 drugstore water shoes – they have zero grip on wet rock and the soles melt on hot pavement.

You don’t need to overthink this. Pick your priority: protection or feel.
