You don’t need to store everything. For what you keep, the answer is vertical storage and vacuum bags.

The biggest mistake people make is trying to store a full-sized artificial tree in an apartment. Unless you have a walk-in closet you’re willing to sacrifice, that thing is taking up way too much space for something you use four weeks a year. Either switch to a small tabletop tree or find a friend with a garage who will let you stash it in exchange for a bottle of wine.

For everything else: use your vertical space. Over-the-door hanging organizers hold ornaments perfectly. Tension rods inside closets can hold garlands and light strands. Under-bed bins are great for wreaths and smaller decorations – get the flat, sliding ones so you don’t have to lift the bed.

Vacuum storage bags are excellent for anything soft: fabric trees, pillow covers, even some artificial greenery. They shrink things down to nothing.

If you have high ceilings, consider ceiling-mounted hooks in a corner for hanging lightweight decorations in a garment bag. Just make sure whatever you hang isn’t heavy enough to pull the hook out.

Honestly, the real answer is to own less. If you haven’t used a decoration in three years, it’s no longer a decoration – it’s clutter.
