Get something with actual grip — trail runners or approach shoes.

Don’t wear flip-flops, fashion sneakers, or anything with a smooth sole. Wet volcanic rock is like walking on glass coated in butter.

If the islands are tropical and you’ll be in and out of water, a pair of water shoes with aggressive rubber soles (like Astral or Keen) works. Otherwise, lightweight trail runners with sticky rubber — think Salomon, La Sportiva, or anything with Vibram Megagrip. You want deep lugs and a compound that sticks when wet.

Walking poles help a lot on steep, slick sections. But the shoes are non-negotiable. I’ve watched people eat it on misty coastal trails while wearing Vans. Don’t be that person.

Your dry socks will thank you.
