Get the 10-liter lunch bag.

A teenage boy with a big appetite needs a lunch bag around 10 liters, not the standard 5-6 liter adult box.

The usual lunch box holds one sandwich, a bag of chips, and an apple. That’s a snack for a growing teenager. Once you’re packing two sandwiches, a yogurt, fruit, a granola bar, and a big water bottle, you’re already over 7 liters.

Go with a soft-side insulated bag around 10-12 liters. It packs better than a rigid bento box, and the structure means he can actually fit round things like apples and yogurt cups without playing Tetris. Make sure it has a strap and a pocket for an ice pack.

One warning: don’t buy the biggest thing you see. A 16-liter bag starts to look like a duffel and won’t fit in a school locker. Ten liters is the sweet spot — big enough to feed him, small enough to be practical.

A hungry teenager with a too-small lunch bag is just a hungry teenager with a backpack full of crushed snacks.
