Get the bento box with the big clip
The best lunch box for a toddler learning to open containers on their own is a bento-style box with one large, easy-to-pinch clasp — think Bentgo Kids or something similar.
Screw-top containers are out. Ziploc bags are out. Anything vacuum-sealed or button-latched is out. Toddlers need a lid that doesn’t require grip strength and a latch that gives obvious feedback. A shallow tray with a big flip-lock is exactly the kind of thing a two- or three-year-old can crack open without needing help.
Don’t overthink the bag itself. Just get one with a chunky zipper pull and keep the whole thing light. The point is letting them manage it themselves, not impressing anyone at preschool.
If you can, let them practice at home a few times before the first real lunch. Frustrating first day at school is not the time to discover the box is too stiff.
Pick the one they can actually open, and let them take the win.
