Get the bento with the microwave-safe inner tray

You need a separate microwave-safe inner tray if you plan to reheat your rice and sides — otherwise you’re risking melted plastic, warped dividers, and a sad lunch.

Traditional bento in Japan is eaten at room temperature, and that’s great if you’re eating it right away. But most adults packing a Japanese-style lunch in the West want it hot at noon. The problem is that most good-looking bento boxes are lacquered wood, metal, or plastic with tight rubber seals — none of those take a microwave well. A separate inner tray lets you pop out the food, nuke it, and leave the outer box cool and intact.

Look for boxes like the Monbento MB Original or the Skater adult bento series. Both are plastic, have a removable tray, and the tray alone is microwave-safe. Some entire boxes are microwave-safe without the lid, but the tray is still the more convenient option because it keeps the main box from getting greasy or stained. If you want a traditional wooden look, Hakoya makes beautiful boxes, but those are strictly no-microwave — commit to room temperature or pack the rice in a separate microwave-safe container.

If you’re eating it cold, save the money and buy any pretty box. If you want a hot rice bowl at noon, the inner tray is the whole point.
