Get the biggest one you can fit. Just make sure it's not ugly.

For a small living room, the biggest storage ottoman you can physically fit without blocking walkways is your best bet. You need it to actually hold a folded blanket and a pile of remotes, so don’t go cute and tiny—that defeats the purpose.

Three things actually matter here: top hardness, material, and lid stay. A soft tufted top is nice for putting your feet up, but it’s a death sentence if you also want to use it as a coffee table (drinks will spill). Go with a firm, flat top if that’s the plan. For fabric, pick something stain-resistant—performance velvet or a crypton-grade polyester. Leather is fine, but stick to a matte finish because glossy cheap leather peels and looks awful in a year.

The lid hinge is the thing nobody talks about. You want a “slow-close” or gas-piston lid so it doesn’t slam shut on your fingers, and you can open it one-handed while holding a remote. If it’s just a cheap wooden lid with no stay mechanism, you’ll never use it for storage because it’s annoying. Also, check interior depth: blankets need at least 10-12 inches of clearance. If the ottoman is shallow you’re only fitting throw pillows.

One final tip: skip the storage ottomans that are round or weird shapes. They waste floor space. A rectangular one can tuck right under a console table or against the wall when not in use.

Don’t overthink the style. A simple box on four short legs looks less clunky than one that sits directly on the floor and makes the room feel smaller.
