Get the graphing calculator for high school

Graphing calculators are required for most high school math classes beyond Algebra I, even if your teacher says you can get by with a scientific one.

The reason is simple: once you hit Algebra II and Precalculus, you’re not just computing numbers — you’re graphing functions, analyzing curves, and doing statistics. A scientific calculator can’t do any of that. And when you get to AP math or standardized tests like the SAT, ACT, or AP exams, a graphing calculator is either expected or highly recommended.

The Texas Instruments TI-84 is still the default choice — it’s what most schools use, and most teachers are familiar with it. Don’t overthink the newer models. A used TI-84 is fine and will last you through college.

Check your school’s syllabus first, but if you’re buying one calculator for all of high school, make it graphing. That’s the safe bet.
