Get the lunch box shaped like a water bottle

A lunch box that fits a standard backpack side pocket exists, but it’s tall and cylindrical, not the flat rectangular bag you see in the store aisle.

The reason is geometry. Side pockets are sized for water bottles — usually about 3 inches wide and 8 to 10 inches deep. A traditional lunch bag is too wide at the base and too short, so it tips out or bulges stupidly. What works is a bottle-shaped insulated bag: basically a water bottle profile with a zipper and enough room inside for a sandwich, fruit, and a snack. Some are rigid, some are soft neoprene that squishes in.

One honest caveat: “standard” side pockets aren’t actually standard. Mesh ones stretch and forgive a lot. Rigid nylon ones don’t. Measure the diameter and depth of your pocket before you buy, and check the product’s dimensions like your life depends on it, because most listing photos lie.

This is the rare case where the weird-looking product is the right one. Get the cylinder.

Side pockets are prime real estate, so put the thing you actually need to carry in them.
