Get the magnetic lunch box, not the clipped one

Magnetic closures are the answer—plastic side clips and twist locks are the enemy of small hands.

Kids under five just don’t have the pinch strength to crack those stiff latches. That’s why half the preschool class ends up standing in line waiting for a teacher to open their box. Magnetic lids solve it entirely: they snap shut on their own and a small tug pops them open.

The two worth knowing: PlanetBox Rover if you want something that lasts (stainless steel, magnet latches, survives being thrown around for years), and b.box if you want a cheap, lightweight plastic option with a magnetic flap. Both are genuinely openable by a 2- or 3-year-old. The classic Bentgo Kids is a fine box, but its two side clips are a stretch for anyone under four.

Whatever you’re tempted to buy, test the closure yourself: if you need two hands or a fingernail, your kid won’t manage it at school either.
