Get the Metal Ruler

Get a metal ruler — not plastic, not wood. That’s the whole trick.

Plastic cracks at the corners and eventually snaps clean in half. Wood splinters and warms up long enough to bend weird. Metal, usually aluminum or stainless steel, will take a lot of punishment before it gives up. Toss it in a bag, drop it off a desk, sit on it by accident — it’ll scuff, but it won’t break.

Two things to check when you’re buying one:

First, thickness. Don’t grab the super thin one that feels like a shim from a hardware store. Look for something around 1.5 to 2mm thick. That extra metal makes a huge difference when the ruler’s squeezed between books and laptop chargers.

Second, material. Aluminum is light and fine for most people. Stainless steel is heavier but basically indestructible and won’t bend if it steps on a weird angle. If you need to actually draw straight lines and want it to stay true, stainless is
