Get the one with gel in the walls, not the lid

Yes, lunch boxes with ice packs built into the side walls exist, and they’ll keep your lunch colder than anything with gel in the lid.

The big name is PackIt — the gel is sewn into the bag’s walls, so it wraps around all four sides (and the bottom on some models). You freeze the whole bag overnight and pack it in the morning. No slots to line up, no cold spots from a loose ice pack sliding off your sandwich.

Lid-gel boxes like the OmieBox are fine for keeping food acceptable, but they’re not as effective. Cold air sinks, so a frozen lid is mostly just a heat shield above the food — it keeps warm air from getting in, but it doesn’t actively chill what’s underneath. Side coverage wins because you get way more surface area in direct contact with your food, and that contact is what does the actual cooling.

Tradeoff: built-in gel bags are heavy, need real freezer space, and you can’t remove the gel when the bag isn’t full. If that bugs you, the next-best move is a couple of flexible ice packs you wrap around your containers yourself — just make sure you actually surround the food, not toss one on top.
