Get the silicone lunch box with a hard lid
Silicone lunch boxes are a good idea, but only the hard-lid versions are safe for a backpack.
The material is great. Food-grade silicone is lightweight, dishwasher safe, and doesn’t leach anything weird. The collapsible ones also save serious pantry space. No complaints there.
The problem is the seal. All-silicone boxes with suction or fold-over lids stay shut through tension in the soft material. Drop one in a backpack and the drop isn’t the risk—the squish is. A water bottle or laptop leans on it for an hour, the seal pops, and suddenly you’ve got dressing in your textbook.
You want a silicone base with a rigid plastic lid that snaps shut. The soft part flexes around the food, but the hard lid keeps the seal under pressure. Those genuinely hold up in a bag. Just don’t overfill and keep the rim clean—crumbs and grease break any seal.
Save the squishy all-silicone ones for the fridge, not the backpack.
