Get the SJTW cord for anything outside.

SJTW is built for tougher conditions—thicker rubber jacket, water-resistant, and rated for outdoor use. SVT is a light-duty cord meant for indoor lamps and small appliances. The difference in durability is night and day.

SVT cords have a vinyl jacket that gets stiff in cold weather and cracks easily. They’re not sealed against moisture, so using one outdoors or in a garage is asking for trouble. SJTW cords use a heavier gauge wire and a durable rubber or PVC jacket that stays flexible in the cold and resists water. For safety, you want SJTW anywhere there’s a chance of dampness, high power draw, or physical abuse.

SVT is fine for a desk lamp or a phone charger indoors. For a shop vac, space heater, or anything that leaves the house, go SJTW. The price difference is a few bucks. Don’t skimp on the cord.
