Get the stainless steel lunch box

Stainless steel lunch boxes are better than plastic for everyday use, and it’s not really close.

The big wins are durability and smell. Plastic scratches, stains, and holds onto last Tuesday’s curry no matter how hard you scrub. Steel doesn’t. It rinses clean, never absorbs odors, and won’t leach anything into your food. After a year of daily use, a steel box still looks and smells new. Most plastic boxes look rough after a few months.

The tradeoffs are real, though. Steel is heavier, costs more, and you can’t microwave it. If your whole routine depends on reheating lunch in the container, plastic is genuinely more convenient. Also, steel dents if you drop it, and the good ones with sealing lids are annoyingly expensive.

But for most people, the weight is a non-issue — you’re carrying it across a parking lot, not up Everest. And the microwave problem has an easy fix: put the food on a plate for thirty seconds.

If you’re clumsy with lids or counting every dollar, plastic gets the job done. Otherwise, buy steel once and stop rebuying lunch boxes.
