Get the variable-speed pool pump.
If you’re choosing between single-speed, dual-speed, and variable-speed pool pumps, get the variable-speed one. It’s not even close.
Single-speed pumps are the old standard: one speed, full blast all the time. They’re loud, inefficient, and suck up electricity like a frat house mini-fridge. Many areas are actually banning new single-speed installations because they’re so wasteful.
Dual-speed gives you exactly two choices: high or low. Better than single-speed, but you’re still stuck picking between two presets. It’s a compromise — useful if you want to run the pump on low most of the day and only kick it to high for cleaning or heating. But you’re still overpaying on electricity compared to what else is out there.
Variable-speed is the winner. You can dial in any speed you want — super slow for circulation, medium for skimming, fast for vacuuming. The motor runs more efficiently at lower speeds, and you can run the pump longer for less money. They’re also quieter. Yes, they cost more upfront, but the energy savings pay for the difference within a year or two. Plus, most utilities offer rebates for installing one.
If your pump is dying and you’re tempted to cheap out with a single-speed, don’t. Future you will thank present you for spending the extra couple hundred bucks.
