Get the washable markers

Washable markers are the right call for young kids, and it’s not even close.

The whole difference comes down to one thing: what happens when the marker misses the paper. With young kids, it’s not a matter of if that happens, it’s when — and it’ll happen on skin, clothes, walls, and furniture. Washable markers use water-based ink that comes out of skin with soap and a little rubbing, and out of most fabrics in the wash. Regular markers, especially permanent ones, are a permanent decision your kid is making for you.

The price difference is tiny, usually a dollar or two per pack. That’s the cheapest insurance you’ll ever buy. And there’s no real downside — the colors are just as vibrant, and the tips are just as fine. Some “washable” markers aren’t 100% on every surface, so don’t go testing it on your white sofa, but they handle the usual kid chaos without a fight.
