Give fragile food a hard container and you can stop worrying.
The best way to keep berries from getting smashed is to put them in a hard-sided container that bears the weight, then pack heavy items wherever they fit.
Yes, heavy on the bottom and light on top is common sense. But that only works if you don’t throw the bag around and nothing shifts. The real fix is to give delicate food its own structural shield. A little plastic food cup, a glass jar, or one of those chip keeper things creates an air gap and takes the compression instead of the food. Then you can toss a water bottle or an apple next to it without worry.
Chips are the extreme case. They’ll crush under the weight of a single grape. The only reliable move is a rigid chip container or a sturdy box where they can’t be squished. If you’re bento-style, just make sure the fragile stuff isn’t sharing a compartment with anything heavy.
Your berries will survive the bus ride.
