Give fruit its own room

Fruit gets bruised in a lunch box because it’s getting crushed, so the fix is cushioning and separation, not magic.

The single best move is to put fruit in its own hard-sided container — a small lock-and-lock, a mason jar, even a sturdy bowl with a lid. That stops the sandwich and water bottle from leaning on it all morning.

If you want to skip the extra container, the paper towel trick works: wrap the fruit in a napkin or lay one in the bottom of the bag. It cushions the jostling and soaks up moisture, which keeps fruit fresher too. Pack fruit on top, never under the heavy stuff.

And honestly, some fruit just isn’t built for a lunch box. Apples, grapes, and berries hold up fine. Peaches, plums, and ripe bananas are asking for trouble. Choose sturdy fruit when you can.

Future you gets to open a lunch box that isn’t a sad pile of mush.
