Give the kimchi its own sealed cup.

Kimchi and mild cheese can share a lunch box, but only if the kimchi is in a sealed container of its own.

The flavor transfer happens through volatile gases and moisture, not just direct contact. A bento box with compartments still lets those aromas wander — the air inside the box is shared. So the real fix is a physical barrier, not just a separate slot.

Use small airtight containers or little silicone cups with snap-on lids for anything pungent. Drop the kimchi in one, close it up, then tuck it into a compartment away from the cheese. Keep the cheese in its original wrapper or a small container too, even if it’s mild. That double layer is what actually works.

Don’t overload the box. If the lid presses down on containers, seals can pop open. A little breathing room keeps everything in place. And if you’re using a box with a removable divider, that’s fine, but the seal is doing the heavy lifting, not the divider.

Your cheese will thank you.
