Give the teen the boring lunch box

The best lunch box for a high schooler looks like something an adult would carry to work, not something from the kids’ aisle.

Teens are allergic to anything that reads as “made for children.” No characters, no bright primary colors, no plastic handles with a goofy clasp. What actually trends in high school right now is neutral and minimal: black, gray, olive, beige. Think insulated lunch bags that look like tote bags or small duffels, or bento-style boxes with compartments that look like a sleek container instead of a lunch tray.

Functionally, keep it simple. It needs to survive a locker, fit in or attach to a backpack, and keep food from getting weird in the four hours between packing and lunch period. An insulated liner is enough — you don’t need a full cooler. If the cafeteria has a microwave, get something microwave-safe. If it doesn’t, add a thermos for anything hot.

Here’s the real move, though: let them pick it. Give them a budget and a couple of solid options, then let them choose. A lunch box they picked is one they’ll actually carry. The one you pick for them will mysteriously get “lost” by week two.

Let them pick the boring one, and it might actually come home.
