Give your picky eater two options, not a lecture

The fastest way to get a picky eater to actually eat their lunch is to give them two acceptable choices and let them decide. Picky eaters are about control, not just food.

So instead of asking “What do you want?” (total freedom, chaos) or packing what you think is healthy (total control, rebellion), offer a tiny menu: “Ham or turkey? Apple slices or grapes? Crackers or pretzels?” They feel like they’re in charge, you know it’s all stuff they’ll eat.

Also: always include one thing you know they’ll eat no matter what. A safe food. That’s the anchor. If they eat the bread and the apple and leave the chicken, that’s still a win. Don’t turn lunch into a moral debate. The goal is that they eat something and come home not starving.

And get them involved in packing it themselves — even a 5-year-old can put a napkin in a bag. If they touched it, they’re more invested. Doesn’t matter how small the job is.

You’re packing lunch, not fixing their palate.
