Glass containers and an insulated bag are the real meal prep lunch box

Glass containers and a basic insulated lunch bag beat any fancy bento box for meal prep.

The whole point of meal prep is doing the work once and eating well all week. You want containers that go from fridge to microwave to dishwasher without messing around. Glass does that. It doesn’t stain from red sauce, doesn’t hold onto smells, and reheats more evenly than plastic.

Fancy bento boxes look nice, but they’re for people who pack fresh stuff every morning. For Sunday meal prep, you want stackable, leakproof, microwave-safe containers. The classic workhorses are Pyrex Simply Store and Glasslock. Buy a set in two sizes — one for mains, one for sides — and make sure they nest well in your fridge, because you’ll have several in there at once.

The “lunch box” half of this is just an insulated bag with a decent ice pack. If you have a microwave at work, that’s it. If you don’t, get a thermos for soups and stews. But for most people, a $20 insulated lunch bag from Target or Amazon keeps things cold until noon.

Don’t overthink it. Glass containers, a bag, an ice pack, and Sunday is handled.
