Glass lunch boxes are worth the weight
Glass lunch boxes with silicone sleeves are worth the extra weight if you care about what your food touches. Plastic is lighter, but it stains, holds smells, and slowly degrades in the microwave. Glass doesn’t. That’s a fair trade for a heavier bag.
The silicone sleeve solves the two things that make glass annoying: it’s slippery and it breaks if dropped. With the sleeve, you get grip and a little shock absorption. You’re not carrying a fragile jar; you’re carrying something that can handle a normal commute.
The weight is the only real downside. If you hike five miles to work or pack for a flight, that’s a legitimate reason to stick with plastic. But for the average desk lunch, an extra half-pound in your bag matters less than you think. Your shoulders adjust, your food doesn’t taste like last week’s curry.
I’d rather wash glass once than replace plastic every few months. And if you’re worried about microwaving plastic, glass takes away that whole mental battle.
Worth it. Unless you’re a thru-hiker, just switch.
