Glass wins for microwave-safe meal prep

For meal prep that goes straight from fridge to microwave, get divided glass containers. Plastic works, but glass is the version you won’t replace in a year.

The reason is simple: plastic meal prep boxes warp, stain, and absorb smells after a few months of reheating. Glass doesn’t. It heats evenly, doesn’t hold curry odors, and won’t bend out of shape. PrepNaturals and Glasslock both make solid multi-compartment glass containers with tight lids.

The real downsides are weight and bulk. Glass is heavy to carry and takes up fridge space. If you’re driving to work, fine. If you’re commuting on a bike or packing for a kid’s lunchbox, that changes the math — in that case, a good BPA-free plastic bento is the practical choice, just accept it won’t last forever.

One tip either way: the lids are almost always plastic, so pop them off before microwaving or you’ll be reheating hot sauce and lid plastic together. Also skip anything bamboo or silicone with dividers — those are not microwave-safe.

Cheap glass containers are fine. Expensive ones are just shatter-proof glass with a fancier lid. Your future self will thank you when the chili doesn’t permanently orange the container.
