Go big on solar panel area.

You’ll want roughly 400 to 600 square feet of solar collectors for a 15,000-gallon pool. That’s about 60-75% of your pool’s surface area. More is better unless you live in Arizona.

Installation is DIY-friendly if you’re handy with PVC and don’t mind crawling on a roof. The basic recipe: mount the panels facing south, plumb them into your existing filter pump loop with a three-way valve so you can bypass, and add a simple automatic controller or just run it manually when the sun’s out.

The biggest mistake people make is undersizing. Too little panel area and you’ll barely notice a difference on cloudy days. For 15,000 gallons, 500 sq ft is the sweet spot for most climates. Don’t cheap out on roof mounts either — a panel flying off in a storm is a bad day.

If your roof slope is wrong or shaded, ground-mount kits exist, but they take up yard space. Either way, make sure your pump can push water high enough — some old single-speed pumps struggle with roof height.

Future You will thank Past You for buying one extra panel.
