Go for a whole-house humidifier if you can
A whole-house humidifier is the best solution for skin dehydration in winter, but if that’s not an option, a cool-mist ultrasonic humidifier set to 40–50% is your next best bet.
The problem is your furnace. Forced air heating sucks moisture out of everything — your skin, your sinuses, your houseplants. A whole-house humidifier (one that hooks into your HVAC system) maintains consistent humidity across every room without you having to refill tanks. You set it once and forget it. That’s the gold standard.
If that’s too expensive or you’re renting, get a cool-mist ultrasonic humidifier. Why cool mist? Warm mist can breed bacteria faster and uses more electricity. Ultrasonic models are quiet and efficient. Put it in the room where you spend the most time — usually the bedroom. Keep the humidity below 50% to avoid condensation on windows and mold growth. Above 60% and you’re asking for trouble. Below 30% and your skin still suffers.
One more thing: clean the damn thing regularly. A dirty humidifier is worse than no humidifier. Use distilled water if your tap water is hard, otherwise you get white dust everywhere.
Set it and forget it — your skin will thank you.
